Most of the functions of our body are managed by the nervous system and hence damage or harm to one part of the nervous system may make the functioning of the body difficult. The disorders which affect the parts of our nervous system are known as neurological disorders. These disorders are usually found to be affecting the nerves, spinal cord or the brain. Based on the part which such as disorder affects, there are different types of neurological disorders, more information on which has been given in the following part of the article:
Migraine is considered to be one of the most commonly occurring neurological disorders which may occur in all age groups. A migraine is a kind of a headache which can be managed and treated to a certain degree but the reason for its occurrence is still unknown. This headache can be termed as a genetic disorder and is caused when the brain releases inflammatory mediators which stimulate pain.
Progressive neurological disorders
This is a wide category of neurological disorders or diseases and consists of disorders like Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. These diseases generally affect old age people and are put into the category of neurodegenerative. In the case of Alzheimer’s disease, an irreversible deterioration of the brain cells involved in pattern recognition and memory retention takes place due to which cognitive function of the body is lost. On the other hand, in Parkinson’s disease, deterioration of brain cells in substantia nigra takes places. Substantia nigra is that part of the brain
Multiple sclerosis is a type of a nervous system disorder in which persistent attacks on the nerve cells of the brain as well as the spine can result in serious disabilities over a period of time. The cause and the cure of this disease are still unknown. Multiple sclerosis is also an example of an autoimmune disorder.
Most mental illnesses are also classified as nervous system disorders since in them, there is imbalance of brain chemicals involved. Some examples of such disorders include bipolar disorder, schizophrenia etc. Even diabetes and peripheral neuropathy too are considered to be neurological disorders.
