Colitis – An Acute Inflammation Of The Membrane Lining The Colon

Colitis also called as ulcerative colitis; it is a chronic or acute inflammation and sores (ulcers) of the membrane lining the colon. Colon is your large intestine or bowel.

Colitis is a condition which causes ulcers in the top layer of the lining of the large intestine. This condition rarely affects the small intestine.

Inflammation causes the colon to become empty frequently. This condition is called as diarrhea. Ulcers usually form in the areas where the inflammation has destroyed colon lining cells. Some times ulcers bleed and also produce mucus and pus.

You may also experience painful spasms, crampy abdominal pain, fever, lack of appetite, fatigue and rectal bleeding. The symptoms of ulcerative colitis can be similar to other intestinal disorders such as Crohn’s disease (Irritable bowel syndrome). So it is very difficult to diagnose this condition.

Colitis can be affected differently for person to person. The stress of living with ulcerative colitis can also contribute to a worsening of symptoms. Having psychological and emotional support is very important.

Sometimes doctors will recommend removing the colon if medical treatment fails or if the side effects of the medications threaten the patient’s condition.

Ulcerative colitis in kids:

Colitis can strike in childhood. According to studies, about 18 percent of colitis patents are younger than 18. This is an illness in which there are times of flares interspersed with periods when the illness is quiet.

So, changing the diet and consuming nutritious food can help in relieving the symptoms. Proper nutrition is very important if you are suffering with colitis. Some foods can also trigger your discomfort like spicy foods or high-fiber foods.

Colon cancer in ulcerative colitis:

There is a chance to develop colon cancer in colitis patients. About 5 percent of the people will experience this condition. The cancer risks raises with the period of the disease and to how much extent the colon has been damaged.

Sometimes precancerous changes develop in the cells lining the colon and can be called as dysplasia. Dysplasia is a condition which causes cancer to develop sooner than those who do not.

Experimental protein to deal with ulcerative colitis:

According to the recent studies, a genetically engineered protein can help patients with ulcerative colitis. The protein is Nuvion which help 45 percent of the patients with a severe version of the condition.

This protein can be of great help for the people to whom all the standard medical treatments had failed. This protein is a great alternative for surgery.

So, those who don’t want to take surgery can prefer this experimental protein.
